The conditions for Seth to come included him being Carlââ¬â¢s kept man, which means his lone man and adhering to his standards; he was to keep up his appearance and exercise; sex was guaranteed, however without any condoms; he wasnââ¬â¢t permitted to find a new line of work; and he was to do anything Carl desired, when he needed it. The Grapes of Wrath Trauma of The Great Depression - Free Essay Example
American novelist, John Steinbeck, is author to one of the most influential novels of his time period. That being, The Grapes of Wrath, which was published in 1939 depicted the trauma which Americans induced during the Great Depression. Many families were scarred from the memories of this time period, which forced them to leave what they called home and made them scavenge for money to support themselves. The novel hit home for many Americans, as The Grapes of Wrath acted as a voice for many families who suffered during this time period. The Great Depression was the result of a domino effect: from the stock market crash in 1929 and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. In The Grapes of Wrath, the struggles of the Joad family informs readers about culture, politics, and society in this era. Steinbeck teaches about the culture, politics, and society of this era through settings, scenarios, and characters in his novel. The 1930s had a large spotlight of the American Dream and the thirst to be wealthy, which was a result of the Great Depressions scrutinizing effects. This urge for wealth shaped the culture of this era, which was quite understandable thinking back on the conditions of this time period. Steinbeck used his knowledge of this thirst towards richness, to contrast life of migrant workers and the glamorous life, shown in a few scenarios.1 For example, the novel goes on to say, The walls decorated with posters, bathing suits, blondes with big breasts and slender hips and waxen faces, in white bathing suits, and holding a holding a bottle of Coca-Cola and smiling, see what you get with a Coca-Cola. With that being said, the ad brings awareness to the lack of relation within the poster and reality. Furthermore, the migrant workers who had lost their homes and could barely afford to eat.3 Not to mention, there is a section in The Grapes of Wrath where Rose of Sharon had to heal a starving, grow n man with her breast milk, which showed the desperation during this era. At the same time, there are posters of healthy women who do not seem to have a care in the world, while in reality, there are others struggling to make ends meet. As it has been noted, The Grapes of Wrath depicts the culture of the time period, as there was an urge for wealth, while the masses were striving for the American Dream. Another way in which John Steinbeck denotes culture of the time, is by casting out the disadvantage migrant families had in this time period. For instance, in The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck says, Mules! Hey, Joe, hear this? This guy wants to trade mules. Didnt nobody tell you this is the machine age? They dont use mules for nothing but glue no more. When this occurs, it shows the reader how the culture of the time period was changing. With that being said, there was a slight shift between relying on manual labor and technologys assistance. At the same time, it is depicting the disadvantage between the higher class and the lower class. Since the upper class acquired the knowledge of technologys advancements, it left the lower class completely oblivious. Not only was the culture of this time period depicted throughout the novel, but so was politics. For instance, Steinbeck states, A million acres? What in the world can he do with a million acres? During this crisis, many individuals would have supported this question. Notably, there was a huge gap between the social classes during this time period. Steinbeck was voicing for the thousands of Americans, who also believed there should have been a fairer distribution of land to all individuals. The Grapes of Wrath was proclaiming that the government should not focus merely on society as a whole, but more centered around the conditions of the time period and what was needed to mend the era. Steinbeck was not insisting that the government needed to shift towards socialism, but that the government needed to govern more by reason to alleviate the problems of the people. Thus, depicting the politics during the era and how they were thought to be unjust and prolonging the issues at hand. In addition, another contributing factor to politics during this time period, was the rise of anti-capitalism. Capitalism is merely a system with the reliance on corporately owned profits, not managed by the government. To demonstrate the sense of anti-capitalism of the time period. Steinbeck stated, Some of the owner men were kind because they hated what they had to do, and some of them were angry because they hated to be cruel, and some of them were cold because they had long ago found that one could not be an owner unless one were cold. This was stated during the section where the Joads family lost their farm to the landlords when they were not able to pay for their land. Capitalism at the time, could have been considered as a means of a Trap against humanity. 8Thus, Capitalism forced the landlords do something they felt guilty of doing, yet if they did not follow though, they would be jeopardizing their own income. With that being said, The Grapes of Wrath depicts the politics of the time period through anti-capitalism scenarios and the inhumane nature of Capitalism. Due to the deprivation during the Great Depression, many people decreased their need to be generous. Society as a whole, felt torn between their instinct to help others in need and to help themselves. Nearing the end of the novel, Steinbeck illustrates an unforgettable scene, in which Rose of Sharon delivers her stillborn baby and then finds it in her heart to breast feed a dying man.9 During this scene, Steinbeck was trying to captivate the struggle between humanitys instincts. That being, the instinct to do what is morally right and the instinct to help yourself rise. For example, Rose of Sharon had the necessary nutrients, that could ultimately change this mans situation, so she chose to do what she thought was morally right. This could be applied to many situations during the Great Depression, between landowners and tenants or between the rich and poor. All things considered, John Steinbeck wrote a captivating novel that depicted the true essence of the Great Depression. His accumulation of integrating culture, politics, and society during this era acts as voice to the thousands of Americans who had undergone this unforgiving time period. He drew attention to the obvious contrast between the reality of the time and the American Dream, which contributed to the culture of the time period. Even so, Steinbeck bought awareness to the unjust politics and the trend of anti-capitalism of the Great Depression. There is no question as to how The Grapes of Wrath left a remarkable impression worldwide.

Art Critique The Last Supper Essay Example For Students
Art Critique The Last Supper Essay One of the most famous paintings of all time is the painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. I will be using a four-step critique to evaluate this piece of work. The Last Supper was finished 1489. It took three years to be finished. First, I will be describing this beautiful painting by providing background information on this painting. Then I will be critiquing the painting by analyzing how Leonardo da Vinci used elements and principles of designs in it. Third, I will interpret the message behind this religious piece of art. Lastly, I will give my opinion and conclude my analysis. By using the four-step critique you will have insight on this famous iconic painting. I think that the painting is breathtaking. I find it remarkable that the disciples are all very human looking, and portray emotions on their faces. When I look at the painting I feel like thats exactly how Jesus and the disciples looked at that night. I also see and feel that is painting shows the world a huge piece of history. Leonardo de Vincis version of The Last Supper is realistic to me because I can see Jesus and the disciples acting like real people. This painting also has definite artistic elements and principles used. For example, it has balance that creates interest and variety, that makes an observer feel a visual weight. The painting is asymmetrical because of how the disciples are placed. They are balanced using visual weight with the shape of the artwork. There are many different principles that was used in the painting in. Additionally, movement is also used in the painting in Jesus and the disciples colorful clothes. Emphasis is also used because of how the painting is arranged. Jesus is in the middle, and has the disciples all around him. This catches the art critics attention. The strongest principle that was used was balanced. I feel that every disciple was placed perfectly in the painting. Leonardo da Vinci created the painting to show the world a piece of history but he also had a purpose to make this painting. I believe that Vinci wanted to create a painting that people could easily recognize the disciples attitudes. This painting exemplifies the belief that figures should express emotional and psychological realism. The Last Supper is a visual interpretation of the night Jesus is tells his disciples that he will be betrayed. Jesus gathered them all and tell them he know what was coming and to wash their feet. A gesture symbolizing that all were equal under the eyes of the Lord. As they ate and drank together, Christ gave the disciples explicit instructions on how to eat and drink in the future, in remembrance of him. After Jesus tells them that one disciple will betray him which resulted the reaction the disciples display in the painting. The painting holds my attention, and I have this painting hanging at home. The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci was what I expected before starting this assignment. However, I never knew who created this painting. I also didnt know that the disciples expressions portray. This painting in my opinion is a huge part of history. It has an emotional and psychological effect on anyone who looks at this painting. Leonardo da Vinci made an amazing piece of art to capture the moment in which Jesus announces to his disciples that one will betray him. That is why I feel like its one of the most famous and emotional paintings of all time.

Othello Othello Is A General In The Army Of Venice. He Is A Moor, A D
Othello: Othello is a general in the army of Venice. He is a Moor, a dark-skinned man born in Africa, and has risen through the ranks of the Venetian army through hard work and success in battle. He is a respected general, but less respected as a person, because of his dark skin and foreign roots. He is an honest man, and believes that people are honest. This makes him naive in many ways. Othello is a passionate man, and deeply loves Desdemona Desdemona: Desdemona is loyal, faithful, and passionately loves Othello. She is shrewd and wise, but is very subtle about it. Iago: Iago is Othello's sword-bearer. He has been passed over for the position of Lieutenant, and this draws out his evil nature. He feels that he has been wronged and cannot accept the position that Othello gives him. Iago is only concerned about himself and his position, and will sacrifice anyone to save himself and his interests. Act I It is night. Tush and Sblood open the play. Though both Roderigo and Iago display a vulgarity of language, Roderigo makes his mark as a gentleman against the coarse soldier speech of Iago. Whilst one of the curled darlings of the nation, he is certainly not darling to Brabantio nor to Desdemona whom he seeks. Iago reveals such a hatred of Othello shared not even by Brabantio. Roderigo may doubt it but it is one of the truest emotions Iago expresses in the play. In his first speech, one motive for his hatred may be found. Othello has chosen Michael Cassio to be his lieutenant instead of Iago and Iago has nothing but scorn for them both: Othello he describes as loving his own pride and purposes and horribly stuffed with epithets of war (1.1.11-13). As we will learn, there is some truth in these judgements. Iago thinks himself more suitable for the post than Cassio who he derides as a great arithmetician...that never set a squadron in the field / nor the division of battle know / more than a spinster... (1.1.18-23). He is not bookish like Cassio. He has practical experience of soldiering. Of him, Othello's eyes had seen proof - the same ocular proof that he demands from Iago of Desdemona's infidelity - at Rhodes, at Cyprus and on other grounds, Christian and heathen (1.1.27-29). Iago is referred to often throughout the play as my Ancient. The contrast has bitterness in it whenever he replies to Othello as my Lord or Cassio as Lieutenant. In Iago's speech on masters and servants (I.1.40ff), his true concept of his position is revealed and with it the philosophy underlying his malice if such a thing exists: I follow him to serve my turn upon him. / We cannot all be masters, nor all masters can be truly followed...In following him, I follow but myself (1.1.41-43, 57). He derides those who doting on his own obsequious bondage / wears out his time much like his master's ass (1.1.45-46) and praises those who keep yet their hearts attending on themselves / and, throwing but shows of service on their lords...do themselves homage (1.1.50-53). These men have some soul, he professes. His creed worships but himself, and his words suggest contempt for the souls who hold honesty and honour dear. I am not what I am, he concludes, yet Roderigo still trusts him, as do Cassio, Desdemona and Othello. That is Iago, honest Iago, ancient to them all but master at the same time. The first task Iago sets is to wake Brabantio and inform him that his daughter has eloped with Othello. This custom (called charivari) was not uncommon in a situation where one party disapproved of a match. Iago incites Roderigo to yell as when by night and negligence the fire / is spied in populous cities. This practical image serves well the simple mind of Roderigo and such imagery is employed to similar effect to incite Brabantio: Even now, very now, now, an old black ram / is tupping your white ewe (1.1.87- 88). If anything is to Arise, arise / the snorting citizens, it is language such as this. Brabantio's first impression of this as malicious bravery...to start my quiet is all too accurate. Iago declares that you have lost half your soul...your daughter covered by a Barbary horse...now making the beast with two backs. Iago, as throughout the play is creating an image ?
